Circle of success—An interpretative phenomenological analysis of how Black engineering students experience success

Background Though minoritized undergraduate engineering students earn less than 25% of bachelor's degrees, minority-serving institutions (MSIs) are leading the way in producing a large percentage those underrepresented degree holders. However, much published research about experiences occurs within context predominantly White institutions. Upon deeper inspection into apparent success some MSIs, graduation rates specific populations (e.g., Black students) remain critically low. This suggests that there is more to be learned how better support students' success. Purpose We explored at public doctoral university with very high activity. Design/Method used interpretative phenomenological analysis understand eight participants. Findings inductively developed two themes describe experience Hispanic-serving institution, which include building networks and implementing rules engagement. Conclusion Participants enacted their cultural capital construct circles through intentional engagement others, resources, themselves realize work sheds light on what it means successful environment.
